What is HSDPA? HSDPA stands for high-speed downlink packet access. It is an upgraded form of UMTS that allows for faster download speeds. Current implementations of HSDPA may achieve speeds as fast as 3.6Mbps, but future versions are expected to reach 14Mbps.
HSDPA is a mobile telephony protocol and is sometimes referred to as a 3.5G (or “3½G”) technology. In this respect it extends WCDMA in the same way that EV-DO extends CDMA2000. HSDPA gives a smooth evolutionary path for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks allowing for higher data capacity (up to 14.4 Mbit/s in the downlink). This is an evolution with W-CDMA standard, designed to increase the available data rate by a factor of 5 or more.
What is HSDPA? HSDPA introduces a new W-CDMA channel, the high-speed downlink shared channel (HS-DSCH) which operates in a different way from existing W-CDMA channels, but is only used for downlink communication to the mobile. HSDPA is a packet based data service with WCDMA standard which provides a downlink with data transmission up to 8-10 Mbps (and 20 Mbps for MIMO systems) over a 5MHz bandwidth in WCDMA downlink. The high speed of HSDPA is achieved through techniques including; 16 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation, variable error coding and incremental redundancy.
It is a technology that upgrade to current UMTS networks. HSDPA protocol is used for mobile telephone data transmission. It is known as a 3.5G (G stands for generation) technology. Essentially, the standard will provide download speeds on a mobile phone equivalent to an ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) line in a home, removing any limitations placed on the use of your phone by a slow connection. HSDPA improves the data transfer rate by a factor of at least five over W-CDMA. HSDPA may achieve theoretical data transmission speeds of 8-10 Mbps (megabits per second). Though any data may be transmitted, applications with high data demands such as video and streaming music are the focus of HSDPA.
